Abalone, found in rugged coastal waters around the world, are most well known as a culinary delicacy. A favorite in many cultures, abalone has a long tradition of human consumption. On rare occasions, these magnificent gastropods (sea snails) produce natural pearls.
These pearls, commonly baroque or horn-shaped, are rare—found in approximately one in every 2,000 abalone harvested. Large pearls represent approximately 1 in 20,000, while large symmetrical or semi-symmetrical pearls can be as rare as 1 in 100,000 abalone harvested.
