This natural Quahog pearl displays a soft lavender rose body color in a rounded button shape. Under magnification, this particular pearl reveals a soft, diffuse internal optical texture that contributes to its velvety appearance. Unlike the distinct flame pattern seen in many conch pearls or the reflective platelets observed in some scallop pearls, this optical texture is more subtle and evenly distributed within the top of the pearl. It is an interesting feature of this specimen and one we have not commonly observed in other Quahog pearls.
Preserved in its natural, untreated state, this undrilled pearl remains exactly as it formed in nature. Natural Quahog pearls are non-nacreous pearls formed by the Northern Quahog clam (Mercenaria mercenaria), a species native to the Atlantic coast of North America. They occur naturally in shades ranging from white and cream to lavender and deep purple, with purple specimens being the least commonly encountered.
